Words And Pictures

There’s nothing like a few months of quiet (and perhaps a few too many “me, me, me” posts prior to that) to get rid of about a third of your RSS subscribers, so to those of you still reading – thanks for sticking around. I’ve been keeping the good stuff back until now, especially for you.
The last few months have been mostly spent gathering nuts in time for the new addition to the family. But while I haven’t done much writing in this period I’ve been doing a LOT of generative art. Too much really.
My proposed resolution of a new generative art experiment every week for my abandonedart.org site has already proved it’s concept beyond my ambitions. At the time of writing I have cued up 39 of my intended 100, which works out at more than double the intended rate, and the traffic has been increasing steadily. I also spoke at Flash Brighton on the subject of GenArt last month, which forced me to evaluate and conceptualise the work I had been doing, in order to present it to a room full of very intelligent folks. This might, if I were even just a tad more pretentious, have lead me to start taking myself and my work a bit more seriously, but I still think I am more likely to win the Eurovision Song Contest than that ever happening.
As well as the 100 Abandoned Artworks I have also been producing some higher resolution static imagery that doesn’t quite fit the “live” nature of the AbArt site. So I’m going to start posting some of these images here instead. This is the problem with generative art, you hit one good algorithm and you end up with artwork coming out your ears.
This means, in case you had cause to doubt it, zenbullets.com, my address for almost ten years and blog for the last three, is still alive. It will continue to be the main cistern for all my brain defecates out upon the world. And, from this post forward, it will likely start to form a coagulated mass of both words AND pictures. I will endevour to rely more on my art and less on Google Image Search to make things look pretty.

Good to see you back. Please keep producing and posting, and I for one, will be interested to read your words as well as look at your images. Thanks for all your efforts.

Hi Matt
I unfortunately missed your talk at FB tuesday, being out of the UK. It is a subject I’ve been following for a while now, but not actually done much in the way of experiments myself, feeling I’m lacking on the math side of things a bit. Having some time on my hands I’ve been looking into equations a little and would like to start making some digital generative art. I’ve been reading up on MAX/MSP/Jitter (hoping to use some algorithms on video matrices for some live performances), and looked at Processing a while back, while I use flash and AS to earn a living. Do you have any available notes on the FB talk you gave? Was it mainly targeting flash or was it more general? It would be really great to read your thoughts, ideas and processes that were in your talk, and not feel that I completely lucked out by missing it.
The experiments you have over at http://abandonedart.org/ , are they all using Processing?
Many thanks and kind regards
And may I congratulate you on the addition to your family!

Cheers Ant. I might do an updated version of the talk later in the year, if there is demand for it. But I will probably write up a lot of what I said as blog posts too, when I get the time.
Like you I use AS to make my living, but I favour Processing for my GenArt. Everything on AbandonedArt.org (to date) has been created in Processing.

Hi Matt, thanks for the reply. I’m sure there is and will be demand for another talk. I just hope I’m around next time to catch it! I’ll be looking forward to your blog posts on your FB talk and further posts on the subject. I can’t imagine they will be that frequent at the moment though as i’m sure you have your hands full
Thanks again, and all the best!
